CASE 3

Virtual Ecstacy

May 2020 / Stay at Home

The Silent Disco scene has been heavily affected by the current COVID-19 situation. During these turbulent times, project fREĖQUENCY is here sending love to all those who are fighting in the front line, and to every each one of you who are doing your best to protect the vulnerable. While staying at home, there are all sorts of virtual parties going on. Similarly, Ecstatic Dance UK has been hosting regular ZOOM dancing events since the lockdown.

For those who are not familiar with Ecstatic Dance, here is a little background: Ecstatic dance is a form of dance in which the dancers, sometimes without the need to follow specific steps, abandon themselves to the rhythm and move freely as the music takes them, leading to trance and a feeling of ecstasy. The effects of ecstatic dance begin with ecstasy itself, which may be experienced in differing degrees. Dancers are described as feeling connected to others, and to their own emotions. The dance serves as a form of meditation, helping people to cope with stress and to attain serenity.

Ecstatic dance has been practised throughout human history, including in classical times by the maenads, followers of the wine-god Dionysus. In the ancient and widespread practice of shamanism, ecstatic dance and rhythmic drumming are used to alter consciousness in spiritual practices. Ecstatic dances are known also from religious traditions around the world. The modern ecstatic dance was revived by Gabrielle Roth in the 1970s and formalised in her 5Rhythms practise; it is now found in variants across the western world.

It is a freeform movement journey, held in a safe and sacred container, & facilitated by a professional DJ. It’s a place where we can be our unique selves, and also connected to a common source. It empowers people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds to freely express themselves; the liberating atmosphere creates a melting pot of acceptance and the fearlessness with which others move gives newbies permission and courage to dance without inhibition.

As the pandemic situation is changing every day, project fREĖQUENCY will be continuously observing, learning, and researching how these dance experiences can be transferred in the virtual space.

For now, this page is still under maintenance. But feel free to scroll down and have a listen to the live stream soundtrack of the event.
